Fuzzy Fun Fur Cap Knitting Instructions
Use a US size 9 – 9.5 /16 inch long circular needle, little nubbies for the ends so the stitches don’t fall off when you’re storing, a little loop to mark the start of your row, and a set of 4 double pointed size 8-9 needles to use to decrease and finish off at the top (with more nubbies for the ends – two packs of 4 should be good).
Cast on 66 stitches (medium hat usually works for adults). Join, being VERY careful not to twist. I check this for the first three rows to make sure I didn’t twist it up; it’s very easy to do. Knit around until hat measures about 6 – 7 inches from the beginning (without stretching, longer is better).
Decrease rounds for the top of the hat:
Round 1: *Knit 9, k2tog;* repeat to end of round.
Rounds 2, 4, and 6: knit (switch to double pointed needles on one of these knit only rounds – use smaller sized needles)
Round 3: *Knit 8, k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Round 5: *Knit 7, k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Round 7: *Knit 6, k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Round 8: *Knit 5, k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Round 9: *Knit 4, k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Round 10: *Knit 3, k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Round 11: *Knit 2, k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Round 12: *Knit 1, k2tog* repeat to end of round.
Continue knitting 2tog around until there is 1 stitch on each needle.
Cut the yarn and thread yarn through the remaining stitches (I use a darning needle). Fasten off on the knit side of the hat. Turn hat so that the purl side is on the outside (although I wear mine both ways).
Washing instructions: wash by hand in cool water with detergent (Woolite), rinse, squeeze out and shake to fluff. Lay out to dry and fluff. Good as new!
